IDENTIFYING BIAS

Item 1: http://thestrangedeathofliberalamerica.com/lebron-james-vogue-magazine-race-obama-and-small-towns.html

 Bias: Stereotype

Analysis:

This is a page of Vogue magazine; in picture is Le Bron, a black basketball player, posing for picture with a white world’s top supermodel. So this has to be a racial issue. It can be seen Le Bron’s scowling face and standing position; that shows his strength and indignation; in addition, he is standing beside a white supermodel and hugging her waist. Therefore, Le Bron James’ pose is also evoking unsettling racial stereotypes in America; because in America, normally, the Black is always disparaged by the White. They are always seen as criminals and dirty in society by the White. So Le Bron Jame’ s action in the picture as if he is negative that.

Item 2:  http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gays.asp

Bias: Prejudice and sexism discrimination.

Analysis: In this picture is a family: parents and a child who is gay.

Prejudice: His parents have their so angry and unacceptable attitude with child when he says he can be a gay although this is human being’s physiology and their child does not look forward to that at all.

Sexism discrimination: the parent will be happy if their child is not gay. Actually, when they hear their child saying that “I’m afraid I’m straight!”, they look at him uncomfortably and disparagingly.

Item 3:   http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/s/scapegoat.asp

Bias:  scapegoating

Analysis:  in this cartoon image is a meeting of a group of leaders and the banner sentence “I believe there are no bad leaders, only bad followers”. We can find scapegoating here. Those leaders cannot blame “only bad followers” because they have not got any evidences, but they only “believe that”. Actually, no one can determined the leaders or only followers are bad.

  1. Hi Thuy, I have some comments to your entry.
_ In item 1, you said that “This is a page of Vogue magazine; in picture is Le Bron, a black basketball player, posing for picture with a white world’s top supermodel. So this has to be a racial issue”. Actually, I think that it is not a racial issue because they are only famous people who are appeared in cover page of magazine.
_ I really like item 2 and item 3. I agree with your analyses but you should check grammar carefully. For example: “In this picture is a family: parents and a child who is gay”. It should be “In this picture, it is a family…”

  2. Hi Thuy, I a very interested in your entry. I compietely agree with your item 1 and 3, but not in the item 2. I don’t think that is Discrimination. As your analyzing “the parent will be happy if their child is not gay. Actually, when they hear their child saying that “I’m afraid I’m straight!”, they look at him uncomfortably and disparagingly.”,that just proves that it is prejudice. The parents are not happy to accept the truth, but they do not make anything which affects the benefit or right of his son. Therefore, I think it is prejudice but not discrimination.

Hi, Thuy. I like your entry very much. However, it has a confusal in my opinion.
In item 1, I think , actually, the cover does not express racism. It simply is the cover of the magazine. There are two peole- ablack and a white by chance.
I hope my comment will make your entry better. Thank u so much!!!

  4. I think you have some grammar mistakes. In the third iem, the sentence: “no one can determined the leaders or only followers are bad” you should change that: ” no one can determine whether bad people are leaders or followers”.
It is my opinion about your entry. Good luck for u:)
