Item 1. Cartoon picture.

:

Rhetorical divices:

Metonymy: The chief  stands for human being

Simile: The Earth is like a kind of dishes which is being cooking by the chief.

Irony: The chief with his delighted face shows humans’ irresponsibility in front of global warming

Message:

Global warming is the result from the activity of humans.  However, human still continue making  it worse as if nothing will happen instead of finding the urgent solution to stop it.

Item 2: Poem

A Special World

A special world for you and me
A special bond one cannot see
It wraps us up in its cocoon
And holds us fiercely in its womb.

Its fingers spread like fine spun gold
Gently nestling us to the fold
Like silken thread it holds us fast
Bonds like this are meant to last.

And though at times a thread may break
A new one forms in its wake
To bind us closer and keep us strong
In a special world, where we belong.

Sheelagh Lennon

Rhetorical devices:

Rhyme:

me – see, cocoon – womb, gold – fold, fast – last, break – wake, strong – belong.

Paralellism:

A special world for you and me
A special bond one cannot see

Metaphor:

special world: the world between the couple

Bonds: love

Womb, Cocoon: the sustainability and safety of love

Its finger: the strength of love

Simile:

Its fingers spread like fine spun gold
Bonds like this are meant to last

Message:

In this lovely poem Sheelagh Lennon wants the readers to know that ‘Love’ is the special invisible bond which keeps two people connected forever. It is the feeling that strengthens the bond between two people and keeps them together for rest of their lives.

Item 3: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:

Metonymy: the lady: the women in the world

The man: the men in the world

Overstatement: no housework, no cooking, no clean, less work and more money

Message:

Women always have to do all the household chore, but have no money, no time to care for themselves. Whereas, men just go out to work and mostly don’t help with housework. It’s is unfair

About chubbygirl2011

Ek! Ek!...

I am so surprise because we chose the same poem, namely ” A special world”. However, our thought towards the poem is different so I would like to add something:
    – About retorical devices:
I think you should add ” repetition: a special world”.
And I don’t think the Parallelism is used in the poem, I suggest that it is Repetition which I have mentioned above,
In my opinion, Metaphor: a special world is someone’s love and tolerance.

    • I have read the poem again and found that you are right in using repetition instead of parallelism. However, I don’t agree with you that a special world is someone’s love and tolerance. It is a full love world between a couple. Thanks

    • Thanks you a lots. I have just read the poem again, and found that you are right in using repetition instead of parallelism. However, I think metaphor: a special world is a full love world between a couple.

  3. I disagree with you about the metonymy in item1. It’s so general to suppose both the young and old man representing for the human society.
In item 2, I totally agree and highly appreciate your analyzing.
but in item 3, do you forget posting picture?

  4. Hi Hòa, I would like to give my comments about your post:
I don’t agree with your rhetorical device in item 1: I think it should be metaphor instead of simile. because I can’t find any signal of simile in the cartoon. The meaning is the earth like a cook by the human beings and it becomes warmer and warmer.
