Entry 1_ Phí Thị Hồng

Item 1:Fable

The man who went to Heaven and who was able to compare [1]

A man died and because he had been a good person, he went to Heaven, where Saint Peter greeted him at the door.
Welcome! he said. You can enter Heaven right away, but, because you lived such a good life, you can also go and check out Hell first, if you like.
The man was rather curious and said – well, why not – and he went down all the stairs to reach the door of Hell, which opened before him.
Behind the door, he saw many people sitting around tables with delicious food! But they were all very sad, and suffering, because instead of hands they had long knives and forks as arm extensions and they did not manage to put any of this great food in their mouths.
The man went back up to Heaven and said to Saint Peter: Wow, am I glad that I can go to Heaven. That is really some punishment.
Welcome to Heaven, Saint Peter said, as he let the man in.
What did he see there? He saw many people sitting around tables with delicious food, just like in Hell!
And just like in Hell, they also had these long fork and knive extensions on their arms!
But in Heaven, the people weren’t crying or cursing, because they were sticking the food in each other’s mouths! “Try this”, they laughed. “And this!”, and they had lots of fun in the process.

Rhetorical devices:

  • Symbol: Heaven ( happiness), Hell ( sadness).
  • Metaphor: sticking the food in each other’s mouths ( helping each other)

Message: Happiness comes from making other people happy. Don’t be selfish but care for other people, and you will be taken care of as well.

Item 2: Cartoon [2]

Rhetorical devices:

  • Irony: Fortune- tellers don’t use computer to forecast future. The artist want to ironize the people who depend on computers too much.
  • Metaphor: the fortune- teller ( computer), the other person in the cartoon  ( people who depend on computer very much.

Nowadays, people are dependent on so much computers or internet that they ask any question on internet.

Item 3: Poem

A meaningful poem [3]

If you think you are beaten, you are.

If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you like to win, but you think you can’t,

It is almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,

For out in the world we find,

Success begins with a fellow’s will—

It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are,

You’ve got to think high to rise,

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You can never ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man,

but soon or late the man who wins

Rhetorical devices:

  • Rhyme: find- mind, rise- prize, man- can,…
  • Parallelism: If you think you…

Let’s believe in yourself to able to be successful in your life.

  1. I want to share my opinion about your entry.
    In item 1:
I absolutely agree with you about message. In other words, the massage can be understand that treat people the way you want to be treated 😀
    Item 2:
_ I really like your cartoon. It is very funny.
_ You said that: “fortune-teller don’t use computer to forecast future”. I think it is just a mistake. It should have been “fortune-teller don’t use computer to forecast future”.
_ About metaphor, I think this picture doesn’t use metaphor. Can you reconsider? 😀

  2. Hi Hong!

I find meaningful messages among your items, and they are really critical ones. I just want to say further about the last two items’ message:

    – Item 2: It seems that due to the dependence on computer, many people limit their ability and creation themselves.

    – Item 3: All results begin by the thoughts or the ideas. We dare to think, then our expectations can be done and bring us the best results.

I also want to give my comment to you:
    Item 1:
    – I totally agree with you.
    Item 2:
    – I like your picture, too
    – In terms of grammatical mistake, I find a minor mistake: other person ==> other people.
And about Rhetorical devices, The irony is used, it is correct. Also, I think that the author want to imply another side is that the fortune teller trick people by using computer, so his computers are down he does not say anything.
==> The message will be better if you revise it by adding the idea( even people can trick someone by using computer).
Item 3: Repetition is also used:
    — You’ve got to….
    – If you think you…..

  4. Hi Hong,
I find out your post really wonderful and meaningful! However, I wold like recommend some edits to it:
1st item: Happiness in our life is the way we treat one other. The more we share, the more we recieve. So if you want to have a meaningful and happy life you should help each others.
3rd item: eveything in life is up to our choice, so we dare to think dare to do it, we will succeed!

    Hi Hong,

I really love your items and the messages you delivered. However, I think if you analyzed more, it would be better. For example, in item 2, you can describe more about the characters in the image. Who are they? What are their roles in society?
